If you ever wondered how I came up with RULE NUMBER ONE, wonder no longer ...
THIS is why.
Look at how the LIGHT is hitting those grain, whatever-you-call-them! What? Grain Bins?
Yeah.
And those DARK clouds, oh! And yes! Those kinda WHITE clouds too ...
They are all about THE LIGHT!
But yeah, those silver bin things are what really "caught my eye", as I was out there driving across The Great Plains, in whatever state I was in at the time! Those SIX LINES, all lined up on the horizon! I couldn't help but notice!
And when that happens, wherever, yeah, I STOP, and take the time to capture it, so yeah, later on (like fifteen years later!) I can sit here now, and write about RULE NUMBER ONE!
And yes, as a retired Community College photography instructor, and travel photographer, it brings me back to why I go where I go, and photograph what I, well, photograph! That simple.
OK, I checked, and get this, I took this on both my older sister's, and younger brother's birthday, like back in the summer of 2010! Yeah, 14 Aug 2010.
I was on my annual Summer Vacation, and must have driven out West for one of those White Water Rafting Trips I used to shoot for O.A.R.S. (Outdoor. Adventure. River Specialists.) back in the day! Can't remember which river it was on, but it didn't matter, they were all EXCELLENT!
I mean, look, just getting there (or returning back home) was worth the trip out there! Oh yeah, I made them all "SUMMER VACATIONS", that was for sure!
Talk about "SEEING AMERICA"!
In fact, that is what I plan on doing this summer as well ... Driving across country in my Honda HRV thing that I now own. True, it is NOT a Honda Element, but close enough, you know, when I fold the seats down ... It ALMOST works!
And, believe it or not, there are still hotels/motels out there along the highways and, even better, backroads!
Works for me.
But yeah, I still enjoy driving across the country with a camera (or two, or three) somewhere within reach! Been doing it since 1973, you know, when I graduated from high school, and drove my Honda 350cc (or was it the newer 360cc?) motorcycle across the country from Pulaski, New York to Douglas, Arizona, where my mother, younger sister, and younger brother moved to once she remarried and moved cross-country, you know, before moving again the very next year, down to Clewiston, Florida.
Yeah, driving out to see them, kept me busy there for a few years!
Worked for me.
I even got to stop in and see both my aunts and uncles who lived in Indiana, and Illinois ... Lots of trip across The Plains, both on motorcycles, and then all those Honda Elements!
So yeah, THIS images brings back plenty of memories ... But yeah!
That LIGHT!
Those CLOUDS!
That METAL!

Love it.
That, to me, is THE MIDWEST! Period.
Flat, wide-open plains, with BIG SKIES, and all those grain silos thingies, all lit up by the sun!
Love it.
I look forward to this summer ... It will be my SEVENTIETH one, and yeah, that's kind of cool.
And weird.
And yeah, since I can't remember just where I was when I took this, ha! I now will spend all summer looking for those same six, silo thingies! That should keep me busy for awhile!
Good luck coming up with your next adventure!
Just keep "pushing that button"!
Over and over again!
See you out on the road!
You know, SOMEWHERE in America!
Sounds like a PLAN to me!
