Dogwood Blossom Magic
Shot right here, out in my, what some people might refer to as a "Front Yard", but yeah, it's really just the grass between two apartment building's Parking Lots, which yeah, is "kind of like a "FRONY YARD", in this case. Whatever. Works for me! And THIS DOGWOOD flower thingy! That is what really matters, right? Right. THAT LIGHT! And, yeah, that SHADOW I placed it in front of! You know, to "get that BLACK background"! And that's all I'll say about THAT! Just get out there, a

One-a-Day ...
Enjoy. You know I did, while out there taking these over the (many!) years! PLAY, PLAY, PLAY! I started back in what would have been, ahh, MIDDLE SCHOOL. But I got my first camera when I was 18, and halfway through my first cross-country motorcycle trip. Your turn! Just GET OUT THERE with a camera of some sort! You can't go wrong! Well, unless you don't get out there, that is! Or into a studio. Or on your computer. Good luck with all that! Just remember, there is no ONE WAY d

"Play That Funky Music" ...
India. And yes, there was a cobra (or something) there "dancing" ... Really. It just looked kind of wimpy(and was out of focus), so yeah, I CROPPED HIM OUT! It was a snake, just not the larger cobras I was used to seeing ... But I liked the man's face, so yeah ... I got MY SHOT. True, that whole "Pipe Thing" looked kind of strange as well, but yeah, "Beggars can't be choosers"! Come on! I was in India, and came across THIS guy, so yeah, I got what I could! Like I said, I saw

Finding My "Hometown" ...
I lived near, and experienced Mt. Fuji, when I lived in Japan ... I could see it from our Base. I have even been to the top of it twice. Once on my "little" Honda 125cc Trails Bike (really!) as far as I could drive it, the Marines had a tank, "practice area" (or whatever), on the "back side", and then, I just walked up the rest of the way, and another time, yeah, I just drove up to the top on "the other side" like a regular, you know, tourist! Duh? Took my college photograph

Dancin' KOLORS!
India. Yeah, pretty sure, can't remember which city, but yeah, take your pick! New Delhi comes to my mind, but yeah, I'll just leave it at that. Works for me. But, if you know me, and my work, yeah, you know what I tend to do, you know, AFTER "getting MY SHOT", yeah, I start "playing", looking for another shot, right then, and there! PLAY, PLAY, PLAY! Been doing it for YEARS! And plan on doing it as long as I can still get out there, and hold a camera! Or secure it to a tripo

GET CLOSER ...
RULE NUMBER TWO: GET CLOSER Yeah, once you have gotten the "WHOLE" picture, you know, the overall view of whatever it is you are photographing, or usually shoot, yeah, that is where RULE NUMBER TWO really comes into play ... Move-in, zoom-in, crop-in, whatever works for you! I like 'em all! Even sometimes where I really can't, or don't want to get, you know, get ahh, too close! Depends on the subject, the terrain, and many times, yeah, how safe it would be to do so at any giv

"FRAMING"
Hey, I was right there, no need to go buy a frame, I just looked over there, and found one, ahh, easy. LIGHT and DARK, BLACK and WHITE, with a little BROWN thrown in there for good measure, it was all RIGHT THERE in front of my camera, and me! All I had to do was, you know, PUSH THE BUTTON, ahh, a few times ... SHOOT, ADJUST, SHOOT, ADJUST, SHOOT, SHOOT, SHOOT. Come on! Look at this! WHITE and ahh, BLACK, and BROWN ... How WHITE did I want my white? How BLACK could I go, you

Egyptian LIGHT!
I enjoyed my time in Egypt, after dreaming about getting over there for YEARS! And if you know me, yeah, you know this image was bound to come about in some way or another ... RULE NUMBER ONE. Egyptian LIGHT. Morning light ... Got there early, all set up the day before, I might add ... Yeah, a camel, with a rider dressed like a "Real Egyptian" (trust me, he was in jeans just prior to me dragging him back out here!), and those three "pointed things" in the background! I had to

My SPRING Driveway ... Every Year.
Every SPRING, like clockwork ... Over, and over, and over, and over, and over again! My FAVORITE type of tree (and flower!) ... The DOGWOOD tree. Remember, yeah! I grew up in Northern New York, and even went to a Vocational School for, ahh, Landscaping and Greenhouse Management, my last two years of high school, but yeah, DOGWOOD TREES were not brought up, ahh, very often, if I remember correctly ... Did I mention, ahh, HIGH SCHOOL, and ME, in the same sentence? And NEW YOR

"Brick Art"
Went for a little ride this morning, you know, for lunch, over in Taylorsville, haven't been over there in awhile! Very nice ... I used to get over there more often, but yeah, once I did get over there I came across a "new" example of "BRICK ART", that I didn't remember seeing before ... But it is me I'm talking about, so yeah, I took the time to capture it, you know, "just because I could! Reminds me of my first pick-up truck I ever had, yeah, an old, '57 Dodge, that I bough

Talk About "BRICK ART"!
India. Somewhere ... And yes! BEFORE I ever came up with the "TERM", ahh, "BRICK ART"! No, that came later! But now that I think about it, yeah, not THAT long after! Yeah, I checked, 2/7/2020. In fact, that must have been the last trip I made before being "Shut Down" due to Covid ... Anywho ... Yeah, while on that trip to India, we stopped in some village, somewhere, and yeah, THIS is an image I made, once again, by playing off the contrast between the SUBJECT and the SHADOW!

Retirement Gift from Me to Me ...
Yeah, when I retired, I came across this classic, ahh, Kodak, large format, 8'x10', "Old School" film camera. Perfect. I was, ahh, an "Old School" kind of guy ... I was 62, and yeah, signed up for Social Security on my "Lunch Break" one afternoon while still teaching! So yeah, when I was in an "Antique Store" one day, yeah, I finally picked up the "Perfect" gift for an "Old School", College Photography Instructor! And no, I never actually, you know, used the camera, it just "

COLOR(S) and LIGHT!
And black! But yeah, BLACK is a color, right? Right. Now true, I did go to high school, at a real "Vocational" school my last two years, for, ahh, Landscaping and Greenhouse Management, but yeah, I have no idea what kind of flower this really is, I just, you know, like the COLORS! Then, yeah, I set a BLACK card, or backdrop, behind it, then turned on my Strobe, or flash, and FIRED AWAY! Ahh, somewhere! To tell you the truth, I can't remember if I took this in the college clas

TWO WILD, INDIAN, TIGERS ...
I still feel "the chill", that I felt when I saw those eyes looking right back at me! I was in a car, a LONG ways away! These "young cubs" (that's what we were told!) were 'Playing around this tree" while their mother was out hunting! Yeah, these were taken in Ranthambhore National Park, which was the old, Tiger Hunting place for the "Rich and Famous" of the British Empire, back in the day! They were NOT "cubs" as far as I was concerned, but again, I'm no expert! But I do hav

The American "Flag"!
HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY! Turned out I taught College ART 261, and ART 262, for Twenty-five years at the local Community College, right here in my "Home Town", of Hudson, North Carolina! And grew up on Army bases as a young boy, then served as a Marine in my early twenties, then worked as a civilian photographer for the Army, for three years, and volunteered as a photographer for several Public Affair Offices on the Army bases where my then wife was stationed for another seven ye

SIMPLE
You know, this reminds me that, no, I haven't been down to the Everglades in awhile ... Not this PAST winter, anyways! Something about "Falling Down" and going BOOM! But maybe this will remind me that yes! I hope to get down there NEXT winter, you know, like I used to, ahh, "Back in the Day"! Yeah, while teaching, yeah, I used to drive down EVERY year, you know, over Christmas Break, stay at the "Last Campground", usually in the very same "SPOT", and take a little hike everyd

Nice Eye Make-Up ... I Never Knew.
Yeah, I don't think I ever knew Seagulls wore eye make-up! Yeah, turns out I'm not the SEAGULL expert I thought I was, which, to be honest, never even entered my mind! No, I just "PUSH THE BUTTON"! And yes, that is true on just about everything I have even photographed! Well, maybe a little about, ahh, motorcycles, oh! And yeah, that whole "Department of the Army" thing ... But yeah, that was really about, you know, being a MARINE, and, well, I'll just leave it at that! I KNE

Something about a "MID-ATLANTIC FAULT LINE" ... You know, like in SCIENCE class, or something like that ... Out in front of THE CHURCH! "Window Art" in one of the local stores ... True fact: More sheep than people. Really. Christmas in Re .... Well, you know! Hey! I was there, they were there, what can I say? Yes, some BARN thing, built around, and INSIDE, this rock thingy. Liked the EYE "Make-Up"! It, ahh, "caught my eye", what can I say? Reminded me of that one "Beatle" image, you know! Crossing that street! ... Hey! I'm old, what can I say? My "FAVORITE" Shot of the day! Yeah, a wild tiger, ahh, over in India! Unreal. Shot in my driveway ... Remember, you have to think about just the MOON, which is lit by the sun, so yeah, EXPOSE for the SUN! NOT all that BLACK around it! Really! Try f16 at 1/500th of a second with ISO 400. Yeah, ISO 400, s

What I Used to Do With Cameras...
Got my first camera while on my FIRST cross-country motorcycle tour the Summer of 1973. NOT on this tour! This I took, of another tour member, while shooting for MOTORCYCLE TOUR & TRAVEL in Norway. I was riding on another bike as we passed this rider, sitting backwards, with camera on hand ... Years later ... After many, many, miles driving around the world with a camera, or two ...
